Block #4

Make two sets of a flip and sew block. They will both measure 16" high and 20 " wide. The strip width can vary between 1 1/2" - 3 1/2", as long as the final size is 16" x 20". If you are using 2 1/2" strips you will need ten for each flip and sew set.

You will need two pieces of backing 18" x 22", and two pieces of batting 18" x 22".

How to "flip and sew": Layer the backing right side down and next the batting. With two strips right sides together (RST), align the raw edges to the left side of the sandwich. Sew 1/4" from the right edges. Flip open the strip and align the next strip RST, and sew again. Continue to flip and sew.

Trim the quilted sandwich to 16" x 20". Make the second block.

Cut three light 3 1/2" squares (one for the center, two for HSTs), and one light strip 1 3/4" x 15"
Cut one medium strip 1 3/4" x 15" strip.
Cut two dark 3 1/2" squares for HST, and four dark 1 1/2" squares.

Add the 1 1/4" squares to the 3 1/2" square corners. Trim and press. Stitch together the two 15" strips. Press to the darker side and cut into 3 1/2" units. With the light on top of the dark 3 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line across and sew 1/4" on either side of the line. Cut on the drawn line and press to the dark.  Assemble block as shown.
